How to allow for the changes during pregnancy
Expanding everywhere!
Expanding everywhere!
As mentioned earlier, your breasts and ribcage will both expand during pregnancy. In order to ensure your breasts are comfortably supported throughout this time, and without breaking the bank, it is best to invest in a specialised maternity bra. This will also better support your breasts, helping to keep their shape and reduce the likelihood of stretch marks.
Maternity bras
A good maternity bra is designed to save you money, and time, by growing with you as you expand. Look out for extra hooks on the back – all the HOTmilk range come with 6 sets of hooks as standard, allowing for at least a full size of growth, without any loss in support. A good maternity bra will also have cups designed to accommodate your changing cup size. Microfibe, and stretch fabrics are good for this whilst cotton will naturally stretch with use. Some maternity bras also have a wider under-bust band which helps to avoid pressure on your growing bump. Underwired bras are best avoided during pregnancy as unless they fit perfectly (and with your changing size its unlikely to stay a perfect fit for long) the wires can put pressure on the developing breast tissue, leading to soreness and potentially problems with blocked ducts and mastitis during nursing.
Bra fitting during pregnancy
When choosing a bra in the earlier stages of pregnancy it is important to fit the back on the tightest hooks to allow for room to grow. Whilst it may be tempting to go several sizes bigger in the cup than you currently are, women change by differing amounts. It is better to go for a cup size that will support you now, but has some room for growth (try putting your hand inside the cup – if you can do this it has enough room), than a bra that is too big in the cup and leaves your breasts unsupported and sagging.
